The Ministry of Public Works chaired the signing of the land transfer from the Port of Santander to the company Coated Solutions

The port will grant a 45-year concession for 60,369 m2 for construction of an industrial unit for the handling of iron and steel products

The Ministry of Public Works chaired the signing of the land transfer from the Port of Santander to the company Coated Solutions

  • Santander Coated Solutions will invest a total of €112 million in the collection of facilities and will generate 500 jobs.

10-04-2018 (Ministry of Public Works). The Minister for Public Works, Iñigo de la Serna, accompanied by the Vice President of the Spanish Government, Soraya Sáenz de Santamaría, the President of Cantabria, Miguel Angel Revilla, the Mayor of Santander, Gemma Igual, the presidents of Puertos del Estado and Santander Port Authority, José Llorca and Jaime González respectively, and Óscar Heckh as representative for Santander Coated Solutions, chaired the signing of an agreement to make port land available.

Santander Coated Solutions will occupy a plot of 60,369 m2 at the Raos docks of the Port of Santander, where it will build an industrial unit for development of its activity importing, exporting, storing and transforming iron and steel products. As declared by the minister, this is an important step for the Cantabrian economy as it will generate many job posts and secure significant investment. The concession will be for a period of 45 years, it will involve a total investment of €112 million, and it will generate 200 direct and 300 induced job posts.

According to the project presented by the company, the land granted will be used to construct an industrial plant for the implementation of a range of steel transformation processes that will be carried out using machinery inside a series of industrial units built on the ground floor. Attached to the processing and storage industrial units will be auxiliary industrial units that will provide service to the processing facilities. Consequently, the constructed surface of the industrial units and technical rooms will occupy 29,218 m², offices will take up 389 m², and the dining hall and changing rooms will require 293 m².

The main access point to the plot will be via a secondary road at the port, which will have an entry and exit control point in addition to a lorry weighbridge.

The Port of Santander closed the year 2017 with 5.6 million tons moved, which meant an increase of 15.76%, double the port system average. Furthermore, according to provisional data from the first two months of 2018, Santander is the second port in Spain this year in terms of growth (up 36.3%), exceeding 964,000 tons.

Coated Solutions, which pertains to the Network Steel Resources Group, opened its new pre-painted and technology-cut steel factory at the Port of Santander's facilities in December 2016 at an event that was also attended by Iñigo de la Serna. In October 2017, two state-of-the-art longitudinal and cross-sectional cut lines were installed, increasing the coated product range offered by the company to strips and sheets, leading to business opportunities in new sectors, markets and clients.

The plant, which has a pre-coated processing line capacity of 120,000 tons per year, expects to bill close to €100 million annually.

The company, which has two plants in Spain (one in Aranda de Duero and the other in Santander), plans to carry out imports and exports through the Port of Santander where it already has a plot of 15,000 m2. Coated Solutions will import raw materials from the world's main suppliers for their subsequent transformation and exportation, mainly to Northern Europe, the Mediterranean Arc and North America.
