07-29-2019 (Ministry of Development). The President of Puertos del Estado, Salvador de la Encina, along with the president of the Port Authority of Algeciras Bay (APBA), Gerardo Landaluce, has announced that as of October the timeframe will begin to run in which to submit ideas and projects at any of the 14 offices ascribed to "Fondo Puertos 4.0", endowed with 25 million Euros. In addition to Algeciras, another 13 cities, starting in September, will have a Fund office (A Coruña, Alicante, Barcelona, Bilbao, Cartagena, Las Palmas, Madrid, Málaga, Palma de Mallorca, Santander, Seville, Valencia and Vigo).
According to De la Encina, Puertos del Estado is seeking to promote innovation as a sign of competitiveness in the logistics-port sector; one of the tools is this "ambitious" Fund, which will subsidize the best projects with up to 2 million Euros.
In turn, the president of the Port Authority, Gerardo Landaluce, has explained that ports constitute an ideal brainstorming site for start-ups. The project will also complement APBA in innovation and strategy matters, in order to consolidate this port in the Straits as a Modern Logistics Platform "placing us in a better competitive position". In this regard, the president of the Port of Algeciras has recalled that APBA has already been working on various projects, such as the Algeciras Port Living Lab, a full-scale port laboratory, on-site and on-line, in order for start-ups to test innovating solutions in real operating surroundings.
The state-owned Fund "Puertos 4.0" project, launched by Puertos del Estado and managed by the Joint Venture KPMG-Innsomnia, will be officially presented by the Ministry of Development next 3 October in Madrid.
