  • Spain moves more than 65 million tons by sea with Latin America

13-03-2018 (Ministry of Public Works). Puertos del Estado, as coordinator of Spain's port system of general interest, and a healthy selection of Spanish Port Authorities (Bay of Algeciras, Barcelona, Ferrol, Huelva, S.C. Tenerife, Tarragona, and Valencia), and the companies Grupo Romeu, Consorcio Zona Franca de Barcelona and Acciona Infraestructuras are attending Intermodal South America 2018, which is to be hosted in the Brazilian city of Sao Paulo between 13-15 March.

Under the "Ports of Spain" brand, and with the motto "Once you're there, you're everywhere in Europe", it hopes to consolidate the perception of Spain as the ideal connection for attracting not only import/export goods with Spain and Europe, but also as a base for transport by sea.

Latin America has become one of Spain's main commercial partners and the presence of the Spanish delegation will favour these exchanges. During 2017, Spanish ports moved 50.5 million tons of import/export goods with Latin American countries, which amounted to an increase of 15% on the previous year, and, more importantly, goods in transit (14.9 million tons) increased by 25.8%. This last figure gives an idea of the important role Spain plays as a logistics platform for the rest of Europe.

  • BRAZIL: A SPECIAL PARTNER IN SOUTH AMERICA

Brazil has become Spain's main commercial partner in South America. It is ranked ninth in the world's economies in terms of GDP, it hoards 40% of the GDP of Ibero-America, and its foreign trade sees it classed among the world's top 25 leading exporters.

Of the 49.1 million tons of import/export goods moved with the region's main countries in 2017, more than 35% (in other words, more than 17 million tons) corresponded to exchanges with Brazil, which involves an increase of 45% on the 11.7 million tons moved in 2016. The trade balance clearly favours Brazil as exports to Spain last year amounted to more than 14 million tons, mainly involving iron ore, soya beans, crude oil, cereals and flours, while imports of Spanish products to Brazil totalled around 3 million tons and involved mainly chemical products, cement, clinker and petroleum products. In addition, there were 8.7 million tons of goods in transit, of which 67% were imports with third countries as the destination.

Spanish ports and companies wish to continue playing a key role in EU relations with South America and strengthen Spain's status as a special hub in sea transport between both continents.
