The first shipment arrives in Spain with nearly 1,200,000 masks purchased by Mitma for health personnel and workers in the transport industry

This morning, at Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas Airport

The first shipment arrives in Spain with nearly 1,200,000 masks purchased by Mitma for health personnel and workers in the transport industry

  • They will be distributed among public sector workers in the transport industry under State jurisdiction, mainly among those organizations and companies that belong to Mitma and Correos.
  • Mitma will deliver 387,000 surgical masks for health personnel and 75,000 masks for the law enforcement authorities.

28-03-2020 (Ministry of Transport, Mobility and Urban Agenda). A shipment of almost 1,200,000 masks, purchased on a State level by the Ministry of Transport, Mobility and Urban Agenda (Mitma) through Puertos del Estado, arrived this morning by air at Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas Airport, as part of Aena's operation to facilitate the arrival of this type of goods.

The purchase of this shipment has been carried out under the emergency procedure, in accordance with the provisions of Section 16 of Royal Decree-Act 7/2020 of 12 March, by which urgent measures are taken to respond to the economic impact of COVID-19, under the provisions of Section 120 of Act 9/2017 of 8 November on Public Sector Contracts.

This shipment includes more than 725,000 FFP2 protection masks, to be distributed among public sector workers in the transport industry under State jurisdiction, Mitma Group organizations and companies (ADIF and ADIF-Alta Velocidad, Renfe-Operadora, ENAIRE, AENA, Puertos del Estado, etc.) and Correos, and another 75,000 masks for the Ministry of the Interior, to be distributed among members of the law enforcement authorities.

The shipment that arrived last night in Madrid also includes 387,000 surgical masks that Mitma, in order to meet the needs of the national healthcare system, will deliver to the Ministry of Health, for distribution to health facilities through the National Institute of Health Management.

Effective for the protection of workers' health

The FFP2-type masks, purchased on a State level by Mitma through the public body Puertos del Estado, under Order TMA/263/2020 of 20 March governing the purchase and distribution of masks by the Ministry of Transport, Mobility and Urban Agenda – in accordance with the criteria of the Ministry of Health – are effective for the health protection of workers who are subject to risks arising from the current pandemic caused by the Coronavirus.

This is the case of the groups of workers among whom this material is to be distributed: health professionals, law enforcement authorities and workers in the transport sector.

It must be taken into account that the exponential advance of COVID-19 worldwide has increased the global demand for protective material to deal with the virus, a circumstance that has exceeded the production capacity of factories that manufacture this type of equipment. This has resulted in the shortage of this type of material.

For this reason, Order TMA/263/2020 of 20 March, established a prompt and effective process on a State level within the legal framework applicable during the state of alarm to purchase said protection material immediately in order to meet the needs in relation to individual protection and target the public health emergency caused by COVID-19.
