- STRATEGIC SECTORS FOR THE SPANISH ECONOMY AND LOGISTICS
Both the ports of general interest and the automotive industry play a key role in Spain's economy, transport and logistics.
The ports ended the 2015 financial year with net turnover of over 1.044 billion euros, and a result for the year of over 198 million euros. The ports move 53% of Spanish foreign trade with the European Union, 96% with third countries; they generate almost 280,000 jobs, both direct, indirect and induced; and in terms of their economic impact, the port sector contributes 2.07% of the GDP and 1.23% of employment.
For its part, the automotive sector has 13 factories installed on Spanish soil, making Spain the ninth world producer. It contributes 16 billion euros to the Spanish balance of trade and has over 93,000 people employed directly in its factories. Its turnover in 2014 was 44 billion euros. In addition to these figures, the contribution of the suppliers and the logistical sector associated to the automotive industry should also be considered.
