AEMET- Puertos Project

DEVELOPMENT, VALIDATION AND USE OF REGIONAL OCEANOGRAPHIC MODELS TO CLIMATIC APPLICATIONS

AEMET (Spanish Meteorologic Agency) under the authority of t he Ministry of Environment and Rural and Marine Affairs and Puertos del Estado, under the authority of t he Ministry of Public Works, maintain a fruitful collaboration since the mid 1990's. In that moment both agencies decided to coordinate their resources and technological capabilities to provide a more comprehensive meteo-maritime information, according to the needs of the socio-economic activities carried out in the Spanish maritime areas, specifically those related to safety and protection of human life at sea, port activities, shipping and sailing.

This collaboration led to the development and exploitation of the operational wave forecast system. More recently, AEMET and Puertos also collaborated on various projects, as ESEOO (Establishment of a Spanish Operational Oceanography System) or the cooperation project with the countries of western Africa to establish wave forecasting systems and sea level monitoring systems on the African coasts.

Now,in the context of a specific agreement for cooperation signed between AEMET and Puertos del Estado, a new R+D project has been launched to obtain future climatic projections of waves, currents and sea level in the Mediterranean and Atlantic Ocean areas close to Spain. Waves and ocean regional models forced by atmospheric future climate projections will be integrated.

The ultimate goal of the generation of climate change scenarios is to provide realistic estimates of climate trends to those sectors sensitive to weather conditions, such ports. Given that this kind of information will be useful for their strategic planning.
