45.6 million tonnes moved in January
Freight traffic through ports of general interest starts 2024 with an increase of 3.4%
- January sees a sharp increase in TEUs, especially in transit.
- Passenger movements continue to rise with 2.17 million, 7% more than in January 2023.
23-02-2024 (State Ports Public Body). General interest ports moved 45.6 million tonnes in January, 3.4% more than in the same month of 2023.
Last year was marked by a slowdown in traffic (561.7 million tonnes, 3.3% less than in 2022), by global geopolitical tension, which was aggravated in the latter part of the year by the effects on maritime trade in the Red Sea passage. The beginning of 2024 seems to mark a certain change in trend that had already been glimpsed in December in some traffic.
All traffic, with the exception of solid bulk, registered increases in January. In the case of general merchandise, it increased by 5.6% compared to the same month of the previous year, 21.1 million tons, with increases in both containerized presentation, +6%, and conventional, +4.8%.
In TEUs, 2024 begins with an increase of 5.8% compared to the same month of the previous year, to 1.34 million tons, almost identical to the monthly figure for December, registering a strong increase of 13.2% in transit.
Liquid bulk recorded an increase of 5.8% to 15.6 million tonnes, with strong increases in chemicals and oil. Solid bulk fell 7.3% to 7.57 million tonnes, dragged down by coal.
Ro-ro traffic grew by 4.6% to 5.61 million tonnes.
The number of merchant ships through Spanish ports increased by 7.4% in January, totaling 12,482 units, and the gross tonnage grew by 4.5%.
In terms of passenger traffic, in January it maintained the upward trend of 2023, with 2.17 million, 7% more than in January 2023.
The movement of cruise passengers through Spanish ports, which in 2023 surpassed the absolute record set in 2019 with more than 12 million, increased by 8.8% in January, to 667.865.
