Spanish ports exceed 90.6M tons moved in the first two months of the year

  • 22 of the 28 port authorities exceed 2021 data
  • Ro-ro traffic (shipped industrial vehicles) is growing by 16.2% and approaching 11M tons

24-03-2022 (Puertos del Estado Public Authority).

The 46 State ports of general interest, managed by 28 port authorities and coordinated by Puertos del Estado, moved 90,660,299 tons during the first two months of the year, the ports' second best historical record, only surpassed in 2019, when 91.4M tons were moved.

With respect to 2021 data, total port traffic grew by 9.2%, and 22 of the 28 port authorities exceeded the previous year's data.

By presentation, solid bulk grew the most (+23.9%) with 15.5M tons in the year-to-date, mainly due to the strong increase (+111%) in the movement of cereals and their flours, which practically doubled compared to 2021, exceeding 3.1M tons, followed by feed and forage (+22.8%).

Liquid bulk grew by 15.2%, reaching 29.2M tons, with the highest growth in natural gas (+66.2%) with 3.6M tons, and crude oil (+20.3%) with 10.2M tons.

General merchandise grew by +0.35% with 43.5M tons, although conventional general merchandise (i.e. non-containerized) increased by 15.8% within this group, notably for products such as wood and cork (+30.6%), wines and beverages (+21.6%) and foodstuffs (+5.1%).

Ro-ro traffic, i.e. shipped industrial vehicles loaded with goods, reached 10,960,641 tons, which represents a 16.2% growth and indicates that intermodality is an increasingly valued option for truckers for certain land arches.

Container traffic (measured in 20-ft-TEUs containers) amounted to 2.8M TEUs, a decrease of 1.7% as compared with the previous year, mainly due to the fall in transit (-7.9%).

Finally, passenger traffic continued to grow at a good pace, both on scheduled routes and cruise ships, with over 2.4M passengers, more than twice the previous year. The growth of cruise traffic is particularly significant: after the lifting of the restrictions imposed during the pandemic, it exceeded 470 thousand passengers, representing a +646% increase over the previous year.
