The port of Malaga strengthens its connection with the railway network

After the signing of the connection agreement between Adif, Puertos del Estado and the Port Authority of Malaga

The port of Malaga strengthens its connection with the railway network

  • Adif and the Port Authority will establish the formula for the physical and functional connection of the railway infrastructures managed by each entity

  • The Agreement is signed under the provisions of the Railway Sector Act

8-07-2022 (Puertos del Estado and Adif):

Following authorisation from the Ministry of Transport, Mobility and Urban Agenda, the president of Adif, Ms Maria Luisa Dominguez, the president of the Port Authority of Malaga, M Carlos Rubio, and the president of Puertos del Estado, M Alvaro Rodriguez, have signed an Agreement establishing the rights and obligations of each of the parties regarding the connection of the Port of Malaga's existing railway infrastructures and the General Interest Railway Network (RFIG), managed by Adif.

The Agreement sets out the rules for the physical and functional connection of the two networks. This will regulate the coordination between Adif and the Malaga Port Authority in issues key to the safety and efficiency of the railway operations and services carried out in the port-railway complex in the Port of Malaga, including the connection line to the Maria Zambrano Terchnical Facility in Malaga.

Pursuant to the Agreement, the Port Authority undertakes to draw up  an Information document on the Railway Network explaining the characteristics of the existing railway infrastructure in the port and its access conditions. This document shall be incorporated into Adif's Network Statement.

The Agreement includes annexes such as traffic instructions and safety installations on the connection line, as well as the work plan for the railway connection including requests for access to the port by the railway companies or other applicants.

A Monitoring Committee, made up of representatives of the signatories, will be responsible for keeping up to date all the technical documentation necessary for the correct execution of the Agreement.

With this signature, there are now 19 Port Authorities that have concluded this type of Agreement.

Railway connection agreements were included for the first time in the Railway Sector Act, at the same time that Port Authorities were assigned railway infrastructure management functions and the ports' railway networks were incorporated into the RFIG. Puertos del Estado and Adif subsequently agreed on a model agreement to facilitate the processing, approval and application of these agreements in the different ports of general interest, which the document signed today conforms to.
