Presentation of the Management and Operating Model of the Railway Logistics Terminal of the Port Authority of Bilbao in Pancorbo, Burgos
Llorca: The Pancorbo Port Rail Terminal (Telof) will decisively boost the logistics and intermodal activity of the Port of Bilbao
- The Telof currently has a rail connection to operate train sets of up to 750 metres, with a track that can be adapted from Iberian to international gauge
04-03-2016 (Ministry of Public Works). The President of Puertos del Estado, Jose Llorca, took part today in the presentation of the Management and Operating Model of the Port Rail Logistics Terminal of the Port of Bilbao (Telof) in Pancorbo (Burgos), which was attended by the Chairman of the Port Authority of Bilbao, Asier Atutxa, the delegate of the Government of Castilla and Leon, Maria Jose Salgueiro, the Minister of Public Works and the Environment of Castilla and Leon, Juan Carlos Suarez-Quinones, and the Mayor of Pancorbo, Carlos Ortiz.
According to Llorca, the Port Rail Logistics Terminal will decisively boost the competitiveness of the Port of Bilbao by improving land connectivity and intermodal freight transport. This infrastructure will also contribute to the modal transfer of goods as it is linked to the Autopistas del Mar and is thus committed to the sustainability and efficiency of the transport system.
In this regard, the President of Puertos del Estado recalled that the Port Land Accessibility Financial Fund created last year and made up of all the chairmen of the Port Authorities and the Public Agency has a total budget of 466.8 million euros until 2019, with an annuity of 113.7 million euros this year. The Fund allows the ports to participate in the road and rail link outside its service area, which are essential to provide adequate access to its facilities.
Llorca also highlighted the healthy figures recorded by the port system in 2015, to reach a record high in movement of goods, with 501.8 million tonnes, an increase of 4.1% over the previous year. All ports handled over a million tonnes, with the port of Bilbao in particular far exceeding these figures, after growing by 6% and transporting 32.9 million tonnes.
The Pancorbo Port Rail Terminal (Telof)
In December 2010 The Port Authority of Bilbao purchased 480,000 m2 in the 'El Prado' Industrial Estate in Pancorbo, in order to implement a port rail logistics terminal for industrial and logistical use of loads with origin/destination in the port of Bilbao, and transport by road and rail.
Last year The Port Authority completed the Telof rail connection to operate train sets of up to 750 metres with Iberian gauge, with the possibility of adapting the track to international gauge, as well as two-way loading and unloading, a service track and a reception/dispatch track, which comprises a total area of 65,371 m2.
According to the uses defined in the Port Authority's urban planning, the actions will consist of the development of the logistics area for containers and general cargo, with an available area of 58,744 m2, and the logistical and industrial areas with a total area of 75,689 m2.
In short, the Telof will help the Port of Bilbao to be consolidated as one of the main intermodal and logistics centres in the Atlantic Corridor, and as a gateway for freight traffic between North America and Europe.
