13-06-2016 (Ministry of Public Works). Puertos del Estado and a delegation of Spanish ports and companies from the sector will be represented in the Ports of Spain booth during the Transport Logistic China 2016 Trade Fair to be held in the port city of Shanghai from 14 to 16 June. This will be the second time that Spanish ports and companies will present themselves together at the largest industry fair held in all of Asia, where its exhibition space of over 25,000 m2 will gather 500 international exhibitors and over 15,000 professional visitors.
The main objectives of the Spanish trade mission, which in addition to Puertos del Estado will also showcase the ports of Bay of Algeciras, Barcelona, Bilbao, Ferrol, Huelva, Málaga, S.C. Tenerife, Tarragona and Valencia and the companies Barcelona Europe South Terminal (BEST), Noatum, Consorcio de la Zona Franca de Barcelona, International Logistics and Material Handling Exhibition and the Vasco Catalana Group, will present a consolidated image of the support provided by Spanish institutions for developing the shipping, port and logistics sector and its business activity. Likewise, it will present Spanish ports to the Chinese and Asian markets with the goal of establishing solid, stable and lasting relationships to allow for increasing port-related transactions between Spanish and Chinese companies, thereby taking advantage of the vigorous Chinese economy to attract new traffic and activity of added value for Spanish ports.
In terms of volume of cargo, the Asian market is the fourth largest market the Spanish ports trade with. 13.8% of the 488 million tons of cargo transported between Spain and Europe, Africa, America and Asia originated/were sent to Asia, i.e. 67.7 million tons. In 2015, the cargo from/to Asian countries accounted for 46.3 million tons, an increase of 3.1% on the previous year. Additionally, 21.4 million tons went through the Spanish ports in transit, i.e. an increase of 4.4% on 2014. This rise is explained by the implementation and/or expansion of the facilities of major Asian shipping companies (Hutchison, Cosco, Hanjin, etc.) in Spain over the last few years. As a result, the Spanish ports have been able to increase cargo handling, especially cargo in transit.
The joint participation of the government agency Puertos del Estado with the Port Authorities will allow for establishing benchmark platforms to channel the interest of Chinese private and public agents towards the Spanish port business world, so that relationships can be forged which will eventually generate new traffic and added-value activity for Spanish ports.
