The Pasaia Port Authority will invest more than €59 million in the period of 2020-2024

  • UECC is investing in three new hybrid ships that will be able to operate in the port thanks to these investments.

28-10-2020 (Ministry of Transport, Mobility and Urban Agenda) The President of the Puertos del Estado, Francisco Toledo, conducted a work meeting, via videoconference, with Joakin Tellería and Cesar Salvador, President and Director, respectively, of the Pasaia Port Authority, at which they agreed on the 2020-2024 Business Plan, a period in which more than €59.2M of public investment will be invested.

Among the most important measures are the works to increase the capacity of the Lezo dock (€23 million) and, in the short term, the urbanisation of the area of the old thermal power station that will soon be put out to tender, as well as the extension of the ADIF station in Lezo.

On environmental matters, Tellería reported that the Norwegian shipping company UECC, in line with its environmental sustainability strategy, has requested accelerating investments in power supply facilities for ships. The objective of obtaining ISO 14001 certification for the port of Pasaia was also discussed, an international standard that allows companies to demonstrate their commitment to environmental protection by managing the environmental risks associated with their activities, as well as the construction of facilities for the treatment of rainwater coming from fields where there are bulk deposits, included in the investment plan.

Estibadora Algeposa will invest 2.6 million euros in the expansion and automation of a warehouse for general merchandise, and more private investment is expected to be committed through the concession tenders to be announced shortly.

Moreover, the Port Authority proposed to Puertos del Estado a call a follow-up meeting with ADIF regarding the project of the third line to Irun and its connection to the port. This will make Pasaia the southernmost terminal with the two route widths of the Atlantic Corridor.

In relation to the port spaces, the terrain of Iberdrola will be incorporated into the public port domain, where there are five fuel tanks and a water tank, after signing the contract of sale, and two plots in the area of Lezo will be disencumbered.

Concerning the port traffic, the month of September was a turning point for the port of Pasaia as it improved the performance of traffic with respect to the same month of 2019. In this manner, the Port Authority estimates that it will close the year with around 3 million Tm. New cars have contributed to this, which have experienced pre-Covid movement, or solid bulks such as fertilisers and cereals.
