Spanish ports present their offer, "Connecting the world to fresh food", at the Fruit Logistics Fair in Berlin
Fruit, vegetables and greens traffic through Spanish ports exceeded 12 million tonnes in 2021
- 60% of the traffic, 7.4 million tonnes, corresponded to unloaded cargo.
- 12 Port Authorities (Almeria, Algeciras Bay, Cadiz Bay, Barcelona, Bilbao, Cartagena, Huelva, Malaga, Motril, S.C. Tenerife, Valencia and Vigo), representing 87% of the total moved, will participate in the Ports of Spain stand.

The tenure port system moved 12,118,989 tonnes of fruit, vegetables and pulses in 2021, which represented an increase of 0.5% and 0.7% over 2020 and 2019, respectively. 61% of this traffic, 7.4 million tonnes, were unloaded goods, and the remaining 4.7 million tonnes were loaded. It was precisely the unloaded goods that experienced the greatest increase, +5% compared to the 2019 data, which offset the drop in loaded goods, which fell by a similar percentage.
According to the Spanish Federation of Associations of Exporting Producers of Fruit, Vegetables, Flowers and Live Plants (Fepex), Spanish exports of fresh fruit and vegetables in 2021 experienced a year-on-year growth of 2.6% in volume and 7.4% in value, totalling 13.4 million tonnes and €15.68 billion, respectively. While imports of fresh fruit and vegetables in the same year continued the upward trend of previous years, with a year-on-year growth of 5.5% in volume and 4.5% in value, amounting to 3.6 million tonnes and 3,258 million euros.

- PORTS OFFER THEMSELVES AS A COMPETITIVE OPTION FOR IMPORT/EXPORT
12 Port Authorities (Almeria, Algeciras Bay, Cadiz Bay, Barcelona, Bilbao, Cartagena, Huelva, Malaga, Motril, S.C. Tenerife, Valencia and Vigo), which represent 87% of the total of this type of goods moved in 2021, will be present at the 132 m2 stand of Puertos del Estado at the Fruit Logistics Fair, to be held between 5 and 7 April in the city of Berlin, offering a wide range of infrastructures and services for importers and exporters from all over the world.
Thus, Spanish ports offer more than 85 million m2 of land surface and storage areas, refrigerated warehouses with a capacity of nearly 2 million m3, more than 300,000 linear metres of berthing, connections with any port in the world, border inspection points (BIP), phytosanitary services, and all kinds of logistics solutions.
- A SECTOR WITH AN IMPORTANT PRESENCE IN SPANISH AGRICULTURE
The fruit and vegetable sector is one of the most important economic sectors in Spanish agriculture. Thus, according to data published by Fepex, the fruit and vegetable sector in Spain is an economic activity with a strong weight in production, exports and agricultural employment. The sector's share in Agricultural Plant Production reached 17,723 million euros in 2018 (latest advance to January 2019), which represents 55% of the total, according to data from the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Environment. As for the Final Agricultural Production, it represents 33% of the total.
Employment in the fruit and vegetable sector represents 50% of agricultural employment, with 400,000 workers, and also employs 80,000 workers in handling and marketing in the production areas. Exports account for approximately two thirds of the sector's turnover.
