More than 382 million tons moved between January and September 2020
General goods traffic in containers and goods in transit grows during the month of September
- Francisco Toledo: The increase in the recovery of complete port traffic continues
27-10-2020 (Ministry of Transport, Mobility and Urban Agenda) The 46 ports of general interest of the State, coordinated by Puertos del Estado, moved 43.4 million tons last September, which was a decrease of 6.9% compared to the same month last year. However, there is a recovery in port traffic, as shown by the 4.9% increase in the movement of general cargo in containers, which exceeded 16.5 million tons, or the 3% increase in goods traffic in transit, with 12.7 million tons in September.
In the accumulation for the year, 382.4 million tons have been moved, which represents a decrease of 10.7% in relation to the same period the previous year. All the Port Authorities registered decreases in the accumulation of movement of the three quarters of 2020, although with a great dispersion that goes from -2.6% to -29.7%. According to the President of Puertos del Estado, Francisco Toledo, "the accumulation of the three quarters of 2020 follows the forecasts made by Puertos del Estado in April, both in the overall loss figure, as well as in the gradual recovery of traffic as can be seen in the upward curve of the development chart."
Both liquid and solid bulk decreased by 14.3% and 10.3%, respectively, during the month of September. In the case of liquid bulk, the recovery is gradual and in the accumulation of the year, with more than 127 million tons moved, the decrease is 10.2%. Solid bulk maintains a downward curve that was already pointed out at the end of last year, due particularly to the change in the energy model and the progressive decarbonisation companies are undertaking, accumulating a decrease of 18.1% in the first nine months of the year.
Cargo traffic in transit, which as already mentioned increased by 3% during the month of September, highlights the competitive advantages that Spanish ports offer to shipping companies on the main routes between continents. They represent 1/3 of the traffic of moved goods, and in the accumulation of the year they have descended by 4.3%. However, 16 of the 28 Port Authorities present growth in the accumulation of the three quarters.
Container traffic, the most common method to transport general merchandise, since ¾ parts of the total general merchandise travel in containers, exceeded 1.4 million TEUs, with a decrease of 0.6% during the month of September. However, containers in transit, 796,355 TEUs during the month of September, grew by 5.2%
