Cargo traffic through ports of general interest grew by 2.9% through November

•    Growth trend continues throughout the year, with a significant increase in TEUs (+11.2%), particularly in transshipment (+16%).
•    Passenger movement rose by 3.6% compared to the same period in 2023, reaching 38.1 million.

December 23, 2024 (Puertos del Estado). Ports of general interest handled a total of 514,090,311 tons between January and November 2024, representing an increase of 2.9% compared to the same period last year. This growth continues along a trajectory consistent with the rest of the year, influenced by international market dynamics.

In the first eleven months, general cargo increased by 6.5% compared to 2023, totaling 257.5 million tons, driven by strong growth in containerized cargo (+8.7%) over conventional general cargo (+1.7%).

TEUs also recorded a significant rise, increasing by 11.2% to reach a total of 16.7 million units. The notable surge in transshipment TEUs (+16%) continues its upward trend, albeit at a slightly slower pace compared to the summer months (20.2% in June, 19% in July, and 18.1% in August).

Liquid bulk cargo rose by 2.6% through November, reaching 164.5 million tons, boosted by sharp increases in chemical products (+134.8%) and gasoline (+30.2%).

All traffic categories posted gains except for solid bulk, which fell by 6.7% to 77.9 million tons due to declines in coal (-43.2%) and cereals and their flours (-12.9%).

Ro-ro traffic experienced a slight increase of 0.8%, reaching 67.1 million tons.

The number of merchant vessels passing through Spanish ports increased by 0.9% to a total of 153,749 units, with gross tonnage growing by 2.6%.
