
Cargo traffic through Spanish state-owned ports reaches 230 million tonnes by May
• Import-export TEUs increased by 7.2% in the first five months of the year.
• Spanish ports handled over 14 million passenger movements.
23-06-2025 (Puertos del Estado). Cargo traffic through the state-owned ports totalled 229,969,823 tonnes by May 2025, representing a 2.9% decrease compared to the same period in 2024, according to provisional data.
The May figures confirm the downward trend in port traffic so far in 2025, as a result of global trade instability caused by the current geopolitical and economic situation.
General cargo fell by 1.1%, reaching 116.7 million tonnes, with a 2.6% increase in conventional general cargo (37.5 million tonnes) and a 2.7% decrease in containerised cargo (79.3 million tonnes) compared to the same months of the previous year.
TEUs recorded a slight increase of 0.2% compared to the same period in 2024, reaching 7.5 million tonnes. The downward trend in transit TEUs (-4.2%), observed since the beginning of 2025, continues, although the decline was less pronounced in May. In contrast, import-export TEUs rose by 7.2%.
Dry bulk fell by 4.6%, totalling 33.4 million tonnes, while liquid bulk decreased by 4.4%, to 73.6 million tonnes.
Ro-ro traffic increased by 2.2%, reaching 31.7 million tonnes.
The number of merchant vessels calling at Spanish ports fell by 1.1% in the first five months of 2025 compared to the same period last year, with a total of 63,353 calls, while gross tonnage rose by 0.9%.
Passenger traffic grew by 10.2%, exceeding 14 million passenger movements by May.
