The Ports of Spain Showcase Their Strength as a Hub for Wind Power Component Transport in Europe

  • Puertos del Estado and 19 Port Authorities take part in Breakbulk Europe, the world’s largest fair for project cargo and breakbulk, from May 13 to 15

May 13, 2025 (Puertos del Estado). Puertos del Estado and 19 Spanish Port Authorities are participating — under the “Ports of Spain” banner — in Breakbulk Europe Rotterdam, from May 13 to 15, with the aim of boosting project and special cargo traffic through Spanish ports at a time when maritime transport of renewable energy components, such as wind turbines, is on the rise.

The high number of participating Port Authorities (A Coruña, Almería, Avilés, Bahía de Algeciras, Bahía de Cádiz, Barcelona, Cartagena, Castellón, Ceuta, Gijón, Huelva, Motril, Las Palmas, Santander, Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Sevilla, Tarragona, Valencia and Vigo) highlights the importance of this event for the Spanish port system. Breakbulk Europe is the world's largest trade fair for breakbulk and project cargo, celebrating its 20th anniversary with over 600 exhibitors and 11,000 expected visitors.

The goal of the Spanish ports is to highlight their growing strength as specialized hubs for the storage, assembly, and transport of wind power project components—especially offshore wind—thanks to their versatile facilities capable of handling all types of cargo and offering tailored logistics solutions, as well as their connections to the Trans-European Transport Networks.

Project cargo refers to oversized items that require special handling. Spanish ports offer nearly 395 kilometers of quays, including 65 km for bulk cargo, 47 km of multipurpose quays, and 18 km designated for ro-ro traffic.

In 2024, Spanish ports handled over 557 million tonnes of cargo, of which 85.5 million tonnes were conventional general cargo (non-containerized) and 263.7 million tonnes were liquid and dry bulk. Europe remains the main market for Spanish ports, accounting for around 46% of total global traffic.

During the three-day fair, Spanish ports will hold business meetings at the Ports of Spain stand — a 216 m² space under the slogan “Together Forward. Special ports for special loads” — with shipping companies and logistics operators to showcase their capacity to handle and transport any type of cargo worldwide.
