March 18, 2022. The president of Puertos del Estado, Álvaro Rodríguez Dapena, visited the Port of Malaga today accompanied by the president of the Port Authority, Carlos Rubio Basabe, and its director, José Moyano Retamero.
During the day, in which working meetings were held with the Management Committee and representatives of the Port Community, Rodríguez Dapena learned about the strategic projects that will transform the Port and allow the capture of new traffic.
In this regard, Rubio Basabe highlighted that "the Port of Malaga is in a moment of profound evolution that will largely shape the appearance and economic activity of the city center in the coming years." He also added that "it continues to fulfill the function with which it started its activity 3,000 years ago as a Phoenician goods port and gave rise to the city of Malaka."
For his part, Rodríguez Dapena considered that the evolution of traffic, with nearly 4.5 million tons moved in the last year and a growth of 62.5%, the highest in the Spanish port system, demonstrates that the Port of Malaga has the potential to continue growing. "The 62.6 million euros in investments planned for the period 2021-2025 will allow the port to have the necessary infrastructure and services to face the challenges of the coming years," concluded the president of Puertos del Estado.
Undoubtedly, the most significant project will be the construction of the new Dock 8 for the development of logistics activity, which will have a deep-draft quay dedicated especially to bulk, container, and roll-on/roll-off traffic. To this end, various complementary works have already begun to create a competitive space, including the adaptation of the facilities of the Border Inspection Point and the construction of a new road bridge to streamline traffic in the western area.
In addition, the new impetus to the configuration of the port and its opening to the city will materialize in other short and medium-term projects, such as the construction of a megayacht basin in docks 1 and 2 of the port, the creation of a sports nautical marina that will revitalize the San Andrés area, the construction of a hotel on the Levante Dock, and the development of a new office area in Muelle Heredia, among others.
During the meeting with representatives of the Port Community, the commitment to sustainability, both of the Port Authority and the companies operating in the Port, was valued. The Puerto Verde initiative has become a clear commitment of the public entity in coordination with the operators of the site to contribute together to the development of a more sustainable activity, both in daily operations and in the investments made.
After the working meeting, the president of Puertos del Estado visited the terminals dedicated to cargo and cruise traffic and toured the docks destined for citizen use, which are a success story in port-city integration and receive about 10 million visits per year.
Rodríguez Dapena concluded his tour of the Port of Malaga with a visit to the Temporary Reception Center for Foreigners (CATE), located in the port facility, where he was received by the Government Subdelegate, Javier Salas. The government subdelegate highlighted the fundamental role that these facilities, which the government launched in 2019, play in the initial assistance to immigrants arriving on our coasts, and added that the Ministry of the Interior also plans to build the new Civil Guard barracks within the port area with an investment of 1.37 million euros.
