Spanish ports aim to strengthen their role as a key player in European logistics
- Puertos del Estado highlights the commitment to innovation and sustainability as drivers of competitiveness
02-06-2025 (Puertos del Estado). Puertos del Estado and 12 Spanish Port Authorities (A Coruña, Almería, Barcelona, Cartagena, Castellón, Huelva, Motril, Santander, Seville, Tarragona, Valencia and Vigo) are taking part in the largest logistics fair in Europe, Transport Logistic, held in the German city of Munich from 2 to 5 June.
At the Ports of Spain stand, covering 186 m² and under the claim ‘Together forward. From our ports to anywhere you can imagine’, Spanish ports aim to consolidate Spain as the ideal gateway for attracting not only import/export flows between Spain and Europe, but also as a hub for intercontinental maritime transits. Trade flows with European countries account for around 46% of the total cargo handled by Spanish ports. Transit cargo through Spanish ports, approximately 150 million tonnes in 2024, represents 27% of the total.
In addition, Puertos del Estado seeks to highlight the commitment of the state-owned port system to innovation processes and sustainability policies, which are transforming not only Spanish ports but also the wider transport and logistics sector.
The offering presented by Puertos del Estado and the ports of general interest to logistics stakeholders gathered in the economic heart of Europe includes nearly 395,000 linear metres of quays and 100 million square metres of land and storage areas, as well as connections to ports around the world, upgraded Border Control Posts (BCPs) following the entry into force of the new border inspection services model, and a wide range of logistics solutions.
In addition to business meetings with shipping companies and logistics operators at the stand, on Tuesday 3 June at 10:00 a.m., a roundtable organised by Puertos del Estado and ICEX will take place in Hall A3, under the title ‘Smart Ports: Beyond Digitalization in Port Management’. Speakers will include Lucinio Muñoz, Economic and Commercial Counsellor at the Spanish Embassy in Germany; Carles Rúa, Head of Innovation at the Port Authority of Barcelona; Mafrán Martínez, Head of IT and Systems at the Port Authority of Huelva; and David Castro, Head of Commercial Services at the Port Authority of Vigo. The session will explore how innovation and digitalisation in ports of general interest are key drivers of competitiveness.
On the same day, Tuesday 3 June at 12:15 p.m., the President of the Port Authority of Valencia, Mar Chao, will deliver the presentation ‘Valenciaport, Smart and Sustainable’ at the Ports of Spain stand.
On Wednesday 4 June, the Port Authority of Tarragona will present ‘2026: Port Tarragona–Guadalajara–Marchamalo. New dry port to access the centre of Spain’ at the Ports of Spain stand, highlighting this key infrastructure for the port’s development.
This 2025 edition of Transport Logistic will bring together more than 2,760 exhibitors from 70 countries and is expected to exceed 80,000 visitors, making it the most important logistics fair in Europe.
