Spanish Ports strengthen their position in Europe’s fresh produce trade
• The state-owned port system handled 11.3 million tons of fruits and vegetables in 2024
04-02-2025 (Puertos del Estado). Twelve ports from the state-owned system are participating in the Fruit Logistica trade fair, within the Ports of Spain stand led by Puertos del Estado. The event, held from February 5 to 7 in Berlin, aims to position Spanish ports at the heart of Europe as the best option for fresh produce trade.
Among the competitive advantages that Spanish ports will present to logistics chain stakeholders gathered in Berlin are: nearly 100 million square meters of land surface and storage areas, refrigerated warehouses with a capacity of nearly 2 million cubic meters, almost 395,000 linear meters of berthing space, connections to any port in the world, reinforced Border Control Posts (BCP) following the implementation of the new border control services model, phytosanitary services, and a wide range of logistics solutions.
Additionally, the state-owned port system is committed to decarbonizing the entire transport chain through initiatives such as the development of new fuels and shore-side electricity connections for berthed ships (OPS).
Fruit Logistica is the leading trade event in Europe for the sector, featuring nearly 3,000 exhibiting companies across 27 halls and expecting more than 66,000 industry professionals from 145 countries.
At the Ports of Spain stand (132 m²), under the slogan “Moving the best of nature”, numerous working meetings will be held between Puertos del Estado and the twelve participating ports (Almería, Algeciras, Barcelona, Bilbao, Cartagena, Castellón, Huelva, Las Palmas, Málaga, Motril, Valencia, and Vigo). Additionally, on Wednesday, February 5, a delegation from the Spanish Commercial Office in Germany is scheduled to visit the stand.
In 2024, the volume of fresh produce traffic through Spanish ports reached 11,299,220 tons, slightly below the 11.9 million tons recorded in 2023, yet exceeding the 11.11 million tons of 2022.
