Spanish state-owned ports handled over 368 million tonnes of cargo in the first eight months

•    Container traffic (TEUs) grew by 1.9% up to July, with an 8.2% increase in import-export TEUs, continuing the upward trend in this segment.
•    Spanish ports recorded more than 29 million passenger movements.

23-09-2025 (Puertos del Estado). Spanish state-owned ports handled 368,695,057 tonnes up to August 2025, representing a 2.3% decrease compared to the same period of the previous year, according to provisional data. These figures are consistent with the trend observed since the beginning of the year, marked by the weakness of global trade stemming from geopolitical and economic uncertainty. By type of cargo, general cargo remained stable, with strong growth in conventional cargo offsetting the decline in bulk traffic.

General cargo registered a slight decrease of 0.2%, totalling 188 million tonnes, with conventional cargo increasing by 4.2% to 59.8 million tonnes, while containerised cargo fell by 2.1% (128 million tonnes) compared with the same period of 2024.

Container traffic (TEUs) increased by 1.9%, reaching 12.4 million units up to August. The decline in transshipment TEUs continued (-2.2%) since the beginning of the year, although at a more moderate pace. In contrast, import-export TEUs maintained their upward trend (+8.2%) across Spanish ports.

Solid bulk traffic recorded a 6.6% decrease compared with the same period of the previous year, with a total of 52.6 million tonnes, while liquid bulk fell by 3.1% to 118.1 million tonnes, due to lower crude oil and oil products traffic.

Ro-ro traffic grew by 3%, surpassing 50 million tonnes.
The number of merchant vessels calling at Spanish ports decreased by 2% compared to the first eight months of the previous year, with a total of 109,849 vessels, while gross tonnage increased by 0.6%.
Passenger traffic rose by 5% up to August, compared to the same period in 2024, surpassing 29.3 million passenger movements.
