Spanish ports promote trade flows with Latin America at Intermodal

  • Spanish ports handled more than 60 million tonnes with Latin America in 2025
  • Trade with Brazil, the main Latin American partner and host of the fair, reached 46.2% of total cargo volume

14-04-2026 (Puertos del Estado). Puertos del Estado and six Spanish Port Authorities are participating, from today until April 16, in Intermodal South America, one of the world’s leading trade fairs for logistics, freight transport and foreign trade.

The Spanish delegation is made up of State Ports and the Port Authorities of Algeciras, Bilbao (through Uniport Bilbao), Barcelona, Las Palmas, Tenerife and Valencia, and is located in the Spain Pavilion, coordinated by ICEX and the Trade Office of Spain in São Paulo.

The aim is to strengthen and boost trade flows between Spain and Latin America, which in 2025 amounted to 60.6 million tonnes of goods. Trade with Brazil, Spain’s main maritime trading partner in the region and its third worldwide, exceeded 28 million tonnes, representing 46.2% of total cargo handled. Regarding container traffic (TEUs) with the host country, it accounted for 36.9% (603,229 TEUs) of the total with Latin America.

In the first two months of 2026, traffic between the two regions exceeded 8 million tonnes, below the figures recorded in the same period of 2025, which confirms the strategic importance of this event.

The slogan of the Spanish pavilion is “Moving forward together. From our ports to anywhere you can imagine,” showcasing the competitive advantages of Spanish ports. State Ports and the Spanish port system are strengthening cooperation with Latin America through the signing of agreements that promote the exchange of best practices and reinforce trade ties between both regions.

Spanish ports are key components of the Trans-European Transport Networks and the main logistics hub in southern Europe for international trade in goods. They offer a network of high-quality infrastructure and services for all types of traffic, including more than 340 km of quays, nearly 100 million m² of logistics space, and connections to more than 200 ports worldwide.
