Cargo traffic through ports of general interest reaches 86 million tonnes in the first two months of the year
Liquid bulk maintains strong performance, up 3.6%, driven by the energy sector, with significant increases in fuel movements
24-03-2026 (Puertos del Estado). Ports of general interest handled 85,955,203 tonnes up to February 2026, representing a 1.3% decrease compared to the same period of the previous year. Overall economic uncertainty and some temporary terminal closures due to adverse weather conditions have affected all traffic segments.
General cargo has slowed its decline and recorded a 4% decrease up to February—compared to an 8.1% drop in January—with more than 42 million tonnes handled, of which 28.7 million tonnes correspond to containerized cargo and 13.2 million tonnes to conventional cargo.
Despite weather and geopolitical instability, TEUs recorded a slight decrease of 0.3%, reaching 2.8 million units in the first two months of the year.
Liquid bulk cargo improved its figures, reaching 28.8 million tonnes, a 3.6% increase accumulated since January, driven by gasoline, diesel and natural gas. Solid bulk cargo recorded a 1.9% decrease, with a cumulative total of 12.7 million tonnes.
Ro-ro traffic decreased by 5.3%, reaching 11.1 million tonnes.
The number of merchant vessels calling at Spanish ports decreased by 8%, to 21,756 units, with a 1.8% reduction in gross tonnage.
Passenger traffic exceeded 4.4 million movements up to February, with no variation compared to the same period last year.
