Cargo traffic through Spain’s State-owned ports exceeds 323.8 million tonnes in the first seven months

  • Containers (TEUs) increased by 1.5% up to July, with import-export TEUs rising by 8.7%, continuing the upward trend of this traffic.
  • Spanish ports recorded over 22.9 million passenger movements.

22-08-2025 (Puertos del Estado). Spain’s State-owned ports handled 323,853,685 tonnes of cargo up to July 2025, representing a 2.3% decrease compared to the same period of the previous year, according to provisional data. These figures reflect the context of stagnant global trade, amid ongoing geopolitical and economic uncertainty and instability.

Breakdown by type of cargo

General cargo registered a 0.2% decline in the first seven months of the year, reaching 165.5 million tonnes. Within this category, conventional general cargo rose by 4.4% to 53.4 million tonnes, while containerised cargo fell by 2.3% (112.1 million tonnes) compared to the same period last year.

TEUs grew by 1.5%, reaching 10.8 million units up to July. The downward trend in transhipment TEUs continued (-3.1%) since the beginning of the year, correcting the sharp increase recorded in 2024 (+19.2%) due to rerouting caused by instability in the Red Sea. However, import-export TEUs continued their upward trend (+8.7%) in Spanish ports.

Solid bulk registered a 5.5% decline compared to the same period of the previous year, totalling 46.4 million tonnes. The positive performance of iron ore and other non-metallic minerals was not enough to offset the drop in cereals and flours. Liquid bulk fell by 3.3%, reaching 103.5 million tonnes, due to lower crude oil and derivative movements.

Ro-ro traffic grew by 3.1%, reaching 45 million tonnes.
The number of merchant vessels calling at Spanish ports decreased by 1.4% compared to the first seven months of last year, with a total of 94,041 calls, while gross tonnage increased by 0.9%.
Passenger traffic rose by 6.5% up to July compared to the same period in 2024, exceeding 22.9 million passenger movements.
