Institutional Visit to the Port of Algeciras
03-12-2025 (Puertos del Estado). The Secretary General for Air and Maritime Transport, Benito Núñez, and the President of State Ports, Gustavo Santana, visited the Port of Algeciras, where this morning they held meetings with the heads of the Port Authority — President Gerardo Landaluce and Director General José Luis Hormaechea — as well as with representatives of the business associations representing the port community and related industries (AGI, Ateia, Aesba, COMPORT, and the Chamber of Commerce) to address the challenges and needs of Spain’s leading general-interest port in terms of cargo traffic. These challenges include expanding port infrastructure to meet future demand derived from the Port Authority's new strategic plan, and the progressive improvement of road and rail access to support import/export flows, while on the maritime side the focus is on enabling new anchorage areas to increase maritime safety in the Bay.
Núñez and Santana visited the container terminals of APM Terminals Algeciras and TTIA, which together handle nearly 5 million containers annually, and they also carried out an inaugural visit to the Port Authority’s Process Coordination Center (CCP). The CCP is the operational nerve center of the Port of Algeciras, where the institution works to further improve its efficiency indicators. The Port of Algeciras is currently the most efficient in Europe, according to the annual ranking prepared by the World Bank. At APM Terminals Algeciras and at the CCP, they were able to watch live the arrival and start of operations of the megaship Moscow Maersk at the Juan Carlos I Quay, as well as the deployment of resources required to meet the performance standards demanded by Gemini Cooperation from its global hubs.
