March 29, 2022. The President of Ports of the State, Álvaro Rodríguez Dapena, visited the Port of Marín this morning, where he met with the President of the Port Authority, Jose Benito Suárez Costa, and the management team of the entity.
The meeting addressed the main projects underway at the port, such as the expansion of the New Commercial Dock of Marín, the increase in depths in the commercial area, or the recent start of a weekly regular railway line with the port of Algeciras for the transport of refrigerated goods.
The strategy of seeking logistic land in the port's surroundings for the development of value-added activities on the port's cargo flows was also discussed.
The President of Ports of the State also discussed with the management team of the Port Authority of Marín and Ría de Pontevedra the situation of land access to the port regarding the increase in gauges for the reception and export of larger diameter wind components, as well as the need for electrification of the railway branch to the port. In this regard, Rodríguez Dapena highlighted that Marín is the best example of the effort that the port system is making to strengthen and expand intermodal transportation in our country.
The meeting reviewed other pending issues, such as the extension of concession deadlines requested by several companies in the port or the need to establish a new disposal point for dredging material.
Next, the President of Ports of the State met with business representatives from the port community, including the main consignees and stevedores, as well as the president of the Port Users Federation. The President of Ports of the State showed interest in the problems that the users of the Marín port are facing due to the Ukraine invasion and the energy repercussions.
Álvaro Rodríguez Dapena also took advantage of his stay in Marín to have a working meeting with Maica Larriba, the Government Sub-delegate in the province of Pontevedra.
PORT VISIT: RAIL CONNECTIONS, A COMPETITIVE STRENGTH
During his tour of the port facilities, the President of Ports of the State had the opportunity to visit the port's railway terminal, which has 7,000 meters of tracks and the capacity for several compositions.
Marín is one of the main enclaves in the entire state port system in terms of the percentage use of the railway in relation to its overall cargo traffic, which also makes it a leader in ship-rail intermodality in Galicia.
Suárez Costa explained the importance of this service for clients throughout the Iberian Peninsula since Marín handles daily by railway a variety of goods such as agri-food bulk, steel sheet coils, wood, cement, or containers.
