The president of Puertos del Estado highlights the commitment of the Port of Motril to sustainability and integration with the City
García Fuentes presents the advances of the Port in decarbonization
March 17, 2022. The president of Puertos del Estado, Álvaro Rodríguez Dapena, has made the first institutional visit to the Port Authority of Motril, where he was received by its president, José García Fuentes, and his management team.
After signing the guestbook, he participated in a working meeting where he learned about the projects implemented and those that the Port of Motril is carrying out, "with sustainability as the guiding axis," said García Fuentes. In this regard, he highlighted the progress in the decarbonization of maritime transport, which will make Motril one of the pioneering ports to implement this system.
The installation of recharging points for electric vehicles, the completion of a project in circular economy, based on recycling rainwater for irrigation of port green areas, and the agreements signed with the University of Granada for the monitoring and subsequent analysis and control of the quality of sheltered port waters to identify biological species especially sensitive to environmental changes, are other examples of sustainability.
On the other hand, the Port Authority of Motril has put into service a new direct road from the highway for project cargo, gaining competitiveness and becoming a national benchmark in this type of high-volume merchandise thanks to good road accessibility. Likewise, the construction of an elevated passage connecting the commercial basins of Interior and Azucenas, which will allow establishing a single customs control "making Motril a more efficient port," has been another of the major projects executed in 2021.
Rodríguez Dapena highlighted Motril's commitment, which, like the rest of the State-owned Port System, is betting on sustainability and full integration with the cities that host them. It is an obligation and a challenge that we assume with responsibility, knowing that society will appreciate it.
The president of Puertos del Estado has firsthand knowledge of the investments planned by the Port this year amounting to 9 million euros, mainly linked to the development of the Master Plan - 'Motril Puerto Abierto.' Among others, it is worth mentioning the construction of the Varadero Promenade, which marks the beginning of the realization of the port's opening to the city.
In addition, the president of Puertos del Estado has held a meeting with the Port Community and representatives of business entities who conveyed their concern about the situation of the railway corridor, "since it is the only General Interest Port of the State that does not have a connection at the destination," leaving us openly at a disadvantage limiting its growth possibilities.
