Sea water temperatures hit historic records this May
• All buoys in the Cantabrian Sea and Galicia area, and most of those in the Mediterranean, recorded their highest sea water temperatures ever measured in May, with the Mahón buoy reaching 26.58ºC.
• Puertos del Estado receives real-time data from all its monitoring networks and manages and distributes information on sea temperature and other marine variables such as waves and currents.
02-06-2025 (Puertos del Estado). Sea water temperatures reached new records this May, exceeding the highest values ever registered for this month in historical series, according to measurements carried out by the Puertos del Estado buoy networks.
Twelve of the 15 buoys in the Deep-water Buoy Network and 6 of the 14 buoys in the Coastal Buoy Network (all those moored in the Cantabrian Sea and Galicia area, and most of those in the Mediterranean) recorded their highest May sea water temperatures in 2026.
Within the Deep-water Buoy Network, the highest sea water temperature recorded last May was 26.58ºC, measured by the Mahón buoy on 27 May, followed by the Dragonera buoy, which recorded 26.2ºC on 30 May.
These are the record values registered in May by buoys in this offshore network:
- Bilbao-Vizcaya buoy: 20.26ºC recorded on 28 May
- Cabo de Peñas buoy: 18.97ºC recorded on 31 May
- Estaca de Bares buoy: 19.25ºC recorded on 31 May
- Villano-Sisargas buoy: 18.72ºC recorded on 31 May
- Cabo Silleiro buoy: 18.71ºC recorded on 27 May
- Las Palmas buoy: 22.93ºC recorded on 9 May
- Cabo de Gata buoy: 22.32ºC recorded on 31 May
- Valencia buoy: 23.47ºC recorded on 31 May
- Tarragona offshore buoy: 24.64ºC recorded on 31 May
- Cabo Begur buoy: 24.47ºC recorded on 30 May
- Dragonera buoy: 26.2ºC recorded on 30 May
- Mahón buoy: 26.58ºC recorded on 27 May
Meanwhile, within the Coastal Buoy Network —located closer to ports and beaches— the highest temperatures were 24.5ºC, recorded by the Tarragona coastal buoy on 30 May, and 24.2ºC measured by the Barcelona buoy on 31 May.
These are all the May records registered by buoys in the Coastal Network:
- Pasaia buoy: 22.8ºC measured on 28 May
- Bilbao coastal buoy: 20.9ºC measured on 28 May
- Gijón buoy: 19.7ºC measured on 25 May
- Langosteira buoy: 19.5ºC measured on 27 May
- Tarragona coastal buoy: 24.5ºC measured on 30 May
- Barcelona buoy: 24.2ºC measured on 31 May
PUERTOS DEL ESTADO MONITORING NETWORKS
Puertos del Estado operates a Deep-water Buoy Network composed of 15 monitoring stations, a Coastal Buoy Network with 14 monitoring stations, a network of 46 tide gauges along the Spanish coastline, and a High Frequency Radar Network with 9 stations jointly owned and managed with other institutions.
All information is received in real time by Puertos del Estado, which is responsible for managing and distributing the data. (https://portus.puertos.es/)
