Spanish ports present their strengths to boost special cargo traffic at Breakbulk Europe

  • Puertos del Estado and 20 Port Authorities participate in the world's largest trade fair for project cargo and special cargo, which is being held in Rotterdam from 21 to 23 May

21-05-2024 (State Ports Public Body). Puertos del Estado and 20 Port Authorities are participating in Breakbulk Europe Rotterdam, from 21 to 23 May, at the Ports of Spain stand, to reinforce project cargo and special cargo traffic through Spanish ports.

The large number of Port Authorities present (A Coruña, Almeria, Avilés, Bay of Algeciras, Bay of Cadiz, Barcelona, Bilbao, Cartagena, Castellón, Ceuta, Ferrol, Gijón, Huelva, Las Palmas, Santander, Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Seville, Tarragona, Valencia and Vigo) highlights the importance of this event for the Spanish port system, as it is the world's largest fair for bulk cargo and special cargo. with more than 600 exhibitors and 11,000 visitors expected.

The objective is to promote this type of traffic, presenting the competitive advantages of Spanish ports for project cargo, those with unusual dimensions and which must be handled in a special way, bulk cargo and ro-ro, especially facilities and services capable of serving any type of traffic, with origin/destination throughout the world and interconnected with the main Trans-European Transport Networks. Spanish ports have more than 390 kilometers of docks, of which 65 kilometers are for bulk, 46 kilometers are for multi-purpose docks and 18 km for ro-ro traffic.

Spanish ports moved more than 543 million tons of goods in 2023, of which 83.9 million were conventional general goods (non-containerized) and 265 million tonnes in liquid and solid bulk.

Project cargo is becoming increasingly important in Spanish ports, especially everything related to metal structures, wind blades, off-shore platforms... due to the versatility of the facilities to serve all types of merchandise and offer logistics solutions to users.

The celebration of the fair in Rotterdam, the largest port in Europe, is another point of interest since Europe continues to be the main point of origin/destination for goods passing through Spanish ports. In 2023, this figure amounted to 220.68 million tons, which represents about 42% of the total moved worldwide.

During the three days of the fair, the ports will hold working meetings at the Ports of Spain stand - under the slogan "Specialists in all things special" - with shipping companies and logistics operators to show their ability to handle and transport any type of goods from Spain to any destination in the world and from anywhere in the world to Spain.
