State Ports develops a tool with information on the protected natural values of port environments

•    The environmental viewer compiles data on habitats, species, and protected areas designated under international, national, or regional instruments in the surroundings of state-owned ports.

•    It will enhance port planning by ensuring a balance between infrastructure development and management, and environmental preservation.

16-10-2025 (Puertos del Estado). State Ports, in collaboration with the Centre for Studies and Experimentation of Public Works (CEDEX), has developed an environmental information tool that allows users to visualize the protected natural values located around ports. This will help improve port planning by ensuring a balance between infrastructure development and management, and environmental care.

This environmental viewer, covering the entire state-owned port system, compiles, among other elements, the areas protected under any international, national, or regional instruments applicable in Spain, as well as habitats and species protected by European directives and national regulations. It also includes information on the ecological and chemical status of the water bodies within and around ports.

This tool forms part of the commitment set out in the Strategic Framework to achieve “Environmentally Sustainable Ports,” specifically in integrating environmental aspects into port planning, design, and operations. This requires rigorous methodologies and reliable data to minimize impacts on biodiversity. In this context, the environmental information viewer enables visualization of all existing environmental data and allows for the incorporation of new data as they become available.

The tool consists of a geographic information viewer that displays the most relevant datasets obtained from various sources, and an online content manager that enables data download. It can be accessed through the State Ports website within the Corporate Viewer, or directly via this link: https://visorPdE.cedex.es/
